Gerald McCarthy is an award winning leader in the field of environmental conservation and has more than fifty years of experience in environmental conservation and philanthropy. After eight years as the top environmental advisor for two Virginia governors, he became the founding executive director of Virginia Environmental Endowment. He also served several other governors on boards overseeing the Chesapeake Bay, environmental education, land conservation, transportation, and water resources, among others. He is a founding member of the Environmental Grantmakers Association and the Chesapeake Bay Funders Network, and a lifetime member of Exponent Philanthropy. He is the recipient of multiple awards for his work to protect the environment, including Chesapeake Bay Conservationist of the Year, and the National Kodak Greenways Award.

In 1975, an unexplained but dire illness came to light among workers at a Hopewell, Virginia chemical plant. More investigation revealed that Allied Chemical Corporation had been contaminating the area with pesticides for more than a decade.
