Evette Lamka taught English, served as a curriculum and staff development service provider, and then became an independent consultant. She began volunteering for the Festival in 1996 and co-chairs the Volunteer Committee with Liza Millett.

Her first novel, Black Water Rising, was long-listed for the Baileys Women’s Prize for Fiction and nominated for an Edgar Award; and her novel, The Cutting Season, was a national bestseller and recipient of the Ernest Gaines Award for Literary Excellence. Locke was a writer and producer on the Fox drama Empire, is a native of Houston, and lives in Los Angeles with her husband and daughter.
