Authors Ethel Morgan Smith and Courtney Thorsson explore how Black women created lasting legacies.

Ethel Morgan Smith’s Path to Grace: Reimagining the Civil Rights Movement includes interviews by ordinary people, many of them women, who created enduring change; as well as firsthand accounts by widely-known names like Nikki Giovanni, Gloria Naylor, and Ann Lowe.

With a variety of primary sources, Courtney Thorsson’s The Sisterhood: How a Network of Black Women Writers Changed America describes how Toni Morrison, June Jordan, Alice Walker, Ntozake Strange, and others created space for activism through writing.

Whether a generational cohort of Black women working towards the same goals, or an organized group that hosted regular meetings, these books shed light on how the bonds of Black women shaped America today.
