Motheread and Fatheread Day

A 25th Anniversary Program of the Virginia Foundation for the Humanities, Motheread and Fatheread is a family literacy program that uses children’s literature to help all members of the family learn to read and strengthen family relationships through the sharing of stories.

10 a.m.

Author visit with Connie Porter,
author of the Addy books in the American Girls Collection.

11 a.m.

Storytelling with Dylan Pritchett,
renowned storyteller of African and African-American tales.

12 noon

Story-Sharing and Crafts
Children make crafts with author Elizabeth Fitzgerald Howard, books with Josef Beery and hats with Festival friends. Meanwhile, parents talk with teachers of children’s literature Nancye Gaj, Pat Crook, Christine San Jose; Children’s Librarian Nancy Cook; and children’s drama educator Jean Wilhelm about effective ways to share books and stories.

1:30 p.m.

Folktales with Christine San José,
author, storyteller, and former senior editor of Highlights magazine.

2:30 p.m.

Fun with Alex-Zan
High-energy entertainment mixed with motivating and inspirational messages.

3:30 p.m.

Read-Aloud Story Time
with community members and Festival authors and organizers.
