Edward Ayers, author of America on the Eve of Civil War, is President of the University of Richmond and former Dean at UVa. A renowned Civil War historian, Ayers helped found the Virginia Center for Digital History and oversaw the Valley of the Shadow project. He is a consultant on the "Making Sense of the Civil War" project, a program of the National Endowment for the Humanities and the American Library Association.
