It was one of our finest hours. In World War II, every artwork in Europe was endangered. The Allies, led by David Finley in Washington and the American Army's Monuments Men -- many trained in Charlottesville -- heroically saved most of the artworks.

Lynn Nicholas's book, The Rape of Europa, discusses the displacement and recovery of works of art in World War II. She lived for many years in Europe and has served as an expert witness and adviser to museums and the State Department. The book won the National Book Critics Circle award in 1995 and is the basis for a motion picture. View Events |
