Scott E. Casper is the author of Sarah Johnson's Mount Vernon and is the 1999 winner of the Book History Prize from the society for the History of Authorship, Reading, and Publishing. Casper is a professor of History at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Earl Swift is a staff writer for the Norfolk Virginian-Pilot. He has been a Fulbright fellow, PEN finalist, and five-time Pulitzer prize nominee. He is the author of The Tangierman's Lament: And Other Tales of Virginia and Journey on the James: Three Weeks through the Heart of Virginia, winner of the 2002 Phillip D. Reed Award for Environmental Writing.

Logan Ward is the author of See You in a Hundred Years: Four Seasons in Forgotten America, the story of his family's move from New York City to Virginia's Shenandoah Valley to recreate the lives of 19th century dirt farmers.
