Adult Author Submission Guidelines:
VABook! adult programs include readings and panel discussions, followed by book signings. VABook! tends to feature authors of books published or reissued within the last two years.
- Authors (or publicists or editors) should send the following to the address at the bottom of this page:
- completed VABook! Participant Information Form (including address, fax, phone, email, and 40-word biography); on the top of the form, check the appropriate genre for the book you would like to be featured
- two copies of the book you would like featured
- any additional press materials your book has received from the publisher or newspaper/magazine/web coverage (optional)
- headshot photo; include a glossy or you may email this in digital format to vabook@virginia.edu once you have received confirmation of your selection
Include in the letter the location from which you would be traveling to Charlottesville during the dates of the Festival, especially if different from your address. Understanding that most programs at our festival feature multiple authors, please indicate your preference for festival reading or discussion panel. VABook! will confirm that we have received your material by email — inquiries on its status are welcome. - Our Program Committee convenes to consider your materials and those of other authors. Since this process takes several months, the earlier materials are submitted the more exposure they will have to the committee. VABook! will begin to contact selected authors in the fall-winter before each spring festival. It is our hope to contact all authors as soon as the Program Committee has decided whether or not to feature their books. The process can be protracted. Feel free to contact VABook! (434-924-6890) or email (vabook@virginia.edu) at any time to make inquiries on the status of a potential program.
- The Virginia Festival of the book is a non-profit agency and does not provide honoraria for its participants.
- Mailing address at the bottom of this page. No materials will be returned.
Youth Author Submission Guidelines
- Send the book or books to review to the address below. Enclose a cover letter
with your contact information including:
- Completed VABook! Participant Information Form (including address, fax, phone, email, and 40-word biography); check YOUTH on the top of the form
- two copies of the book (if applicable)
- social security number (if payment by schools is involved)
- cover letter with description of programs you do, size of audience preferred, number of programs in one day, fees, ages preferred; please also let us know if any audio-visual or other materials will be needed; storytellers should provide references
- headshot photo; include a glossy or you may email this in digital format to vabook@virginia.edu once you have received confirmation of your selection
- any press materials on your book or on your presentations (optional)
- The selection process begins with a complete submission of these materials to the Virginia Festival of the Book, address below. The information is then provided to educators and librarians who will make the final selections. Applicants should understand that school budgets in this region are relatively small. Schools in the area work cooperatively at times to meet higher fees, so one might be asked to make more than one visit if a higher honorarium is required. Lower or negotiable rates improve one’s chances of being selected. The Virginia Festival of the Book itself does not provide honoraria.
- Schools make the final decisions on author participation in VABook! Applicants may contact VABook! by phone or email to inquire about their selection status, but information is limited until a school makes the selection. Schools begin the process in early fall and complete it in January.
- No materials will be returned.
