VABook! 2003 began on the same day as the first American attacks on Iraq. The Poet Laureate of Virginia, George Garrett, opened the Festival with words of encouragement about the mission of reading and the humanities at such a critical time.

Motheread StoryFest puppet
Motheread and Fatheread of Virginia produces StoryFest every year to feature storytellers, children’s authors and book-related activities for youth. Here, a puppet opens the world of storybooks to children at the Old Michie Theater.

Omni events
A busy Saturday at the Omni Hotel includes the annual Vendor’s Fair, Publishing Day and the Crime Wave mystery writing panels.
Mamie Johnson
The feature of the book A Strong Right Arm, Mamie “Peanut” Johnson participated in a VABook! panel about her time in the Negro Leagues and was on hand to throw out the first pitch at the UVa Cavaliers baseball game.
Senior readers
Local seniors scour the Festival final program as they gear up for a week of readings and discussions. It’s a familiar scene to the avid-reading VABook! audience, which numbered 17,113 this year.
Keith Caver
Author Keith A. Caver signs copies of Leading in Black and White for an audience assembled for a panel on colorblindness in the American workplace, one of the many panel discussions during VABook! 2003.
Letters About Literature winners
